As we progress through the Jewish Year and enter the holiday season, it is the perfect opportunity to remind you of ongoing Mitzvah opportunities for you and your friends and family.  

---Ongoing:  "From Our Table To Yours" perishable food recovery program - Do you have extra food from a celebration or untouched food from a house of mourning? Donate to neighbors in need.  Houses willing to accept food are posted on here:  Campaign Against Hunger - (FAQ's)

Social Action

  • Salute to Israel Day Parade (march with fellow congregants in support of Israel)

Mitzvah Committee Mission Statement

  • To carry out the mission of fulfillment of Mitzvot through direct service, education about Jewish tradition and community issues, and advocacy.
  • To act as a resource to the OWHC community, maintaining an up-to-date list of social service agencies and programs.
  • To involve as many people as possible in ongoing Tikkun Olam in a variety of ways and to keep participants active through ongoing mitzvah projects and community outreach programs.
  • To help B’nai Mitzvah students and their families find and complete meaningful "tzedakah (social action) projects" as part of their bar/bat mitzvah preparations. This part of the Religious School curricululm makes explicit to these teens the idea that the mitzvot (commandments) to which they will be obligated as they become bar and bat mitzvahs involve not only Jewish ritual but also social action.
  • To organize and run formal congregation-wide Mitzvah Days/Mornings (pre-Thanksgiving). Mitzvah Day is a congregation community service day created to encourage OWHC members to go out into the community to make a difference in the lives of others.
  •  OWHC offers a variety of mitzvah projects and supports local shelters and agencies with food and supplies through direct donations.
